What is child therapy?

As children grow and mature, they face new situations and experiences. The conflicts are establishing their personal identity and form relationships with others. Children often experience pressure when it comes to school stress, such as homework or peer pressure. At home, they may encounter problems with parents or siblings. To cope with these experiences, it is common that a child has mood swings and feelings of sadness, anger and fear.

These responses to the pressures of life tend to be short-lived and do not have a significant and lasting impact on a child’s life. But sometimes life events can be very serious for a child, such as the death of a parent or relative, divorce, abuse, trauma or serious illness. This can cause stress and pressure that could lead to emotional and behavioral problems more serious.

In many cases, parents may have difficulty helping their children. In these cases, professional assistance and child therapy may be necessary. Some signs that a child may need help from a psychologist or therapist, are:

Child therapy includes many different techniques and methods. child psychologists and therapists select the most appropriate for a specific problem or a particular child and family. The therapy involves sessions with parents, children and the whole family together. Some of the common strategies used in child therapy are:

* Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT – this type of therapy is the best option for children suffering from stress, anxiety and depression. This type of therapy aims at restructuring negative thoughts into positive thoughts. The procedures used in CBT including relaxation exercises, stress management, the practice of coping skills and many other forms of treatment.
* Psychoanalytic Therapy – This is the classic “talk therapy.” Although rarely used in children, can be used in the treatment of older children who will benefit from a deeper analysis of their problems.
* Family therapy – In many cases, this type of therapy can be very useful especially when there are conflicts in the family or when a child is displaying behavior problems.

Child therapy provides children the opportunity to identify, discuss and understand their problems and develop coping skills. It also helps parents to meet the needs of your child. A timely and appropriate child therapy can stop problems from getting worse and causing serious hardship, long-term in children.
